'Going up towards the castle of Panteli, at the height of the mills, a passable dirt road begins on our right towards the hill of Apitiki (300 meters to the end). Here was the location of the Italian battery Lago, a strategic position for the defense of the island and for this reason one of the key points of the German attack on the island during the Battle of Leros in November 1943 (World War II). Here is a tunnel that had been opened on the hill for defensive protection of the battery personnel.'
