The bay of Lakki is the largest natural harbor in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is therefore not surprising that the Italians, during the period of their occupation of the island (1912 -1943), transformed it into a powerful naval base. The large harbor ends in the city of Lakki, a city that the Italians acquired from scratch on drained marshes, a single rationalist architectural ensemble that combines trends from art deco, Bauhaus, Venetian and Renaissance elements, in all its buildings and basic infrastructure. A classic example of the 'International architectural style', designed by architects A. Bernaditti and R. Petracco (Lakki was then renamed Porto Lago). Although the city of Lakki was designated a traditional settlement in 1978, few buildings have been declared preserved, including the old market building with the clock tower.
