The island's cathedral is Agios Nikolaos and is located in Lakki. It stands out immediately for its architecture, the work of the Italian architect Armando Bernabiti, and the engineers Sardelli and Caesar Lois. It was built in the period 1935-1939. The church was originally in honor of Saint Francis before being converted to Saint Nicholas. During the Battle of Leros (1943), it was half-destroyed by bombing, resulting in restoration work beginning in 1950 and on July 15, 1951, the Metropolitan of Leros Isidoros Aidonopoulos inaugurated the renovated Church (which has since functioned as a parish and patron saint of the city of Lakki and the wider area).
