castle built above the plain of Xirokambos with fortifications dating back to the Hellenistic period, it is also called Paleokastro or the castle of Lepides, and is mentioned in documents dating back to 1089. The castle was granted, as a refuge, to the residents of Leros in 1089 by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos after the granting of the castle of Panteliou to Saint Christodoulos, founder of the monastery of Saint John the Theologian of Patmos. Inside the castle we will find a post-Byzantine church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The view towards Xirokambos, its beach and the bay of the same name is very beautiful and panoramic from the height of the castle.
