Pyrgos Kallistis

With 912 inhabitants according to the 2011 census, the Local Community of Pyrgos Kallistis belongs to the Municipal Unit of Thira and includes the Monastery of the Prophet Elias, the bay of Athinios, and the settlement of Pyrgos Kallistis. The latter is a historic settlement and the site of one of the five castles of Santorini. At an altitude of 360 meters, its castle is the highest on the island, and from its peak we can admire a panoramic view of the northern part of the island and the Aegean Sea. The old-timers named the newest settlement that was developed around the castle “Xeporto.” Until the implementation of the Kapodistrias Reform of Greek administrative areas in 1997, Pyrgos Kallistis was the seat of the former municipality of Kallistis.
