Karterados

Located in the center of the island, the Municipal Unit of Karterados consists of the settlements of Karterados and Exo Gialos. According to the 2011 census, the Municipal Unit has a population of 1,293. Just 2 kilometers south of Fira, the village of Karterados is said to have taken its name from the “karteri,” or ambush, that the local inhabitants set up for pirates! Built around a riverbed, the village stands out for the cave houses on both sides of the riverbed in the old part of the settlement.
