The bay of Lakki is the largest natural harbor in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is therefore not surprising that the Italians, during the period of their occupation of the island (1912 -1943), transformed it into a powerful naval base. The large harbor ends in the city of Lakki, a city that the Italians acquired from scratch on drained marshes, with minimal architecture that combines trends from art deco, Bauhaus, Venetian and Renaissance elements, in all its buildings and basic infrastructure.
