The church was built at the location of a pagan tomb from the Hellenistic period. Later, it was converted into a Christian church which was built into the rock. In 1939 the church was extended and took its present form, with the sanctuary of the church where the old temple-tomb used to be. The Church of Saint Dimitrios and the Holy Belt is located on a hill above Sidirokastro, overlooking the city.
