Lakoniki Mani - Mainis Castle
Castle
LAKONIA, ANATOLIKI MANI, ITILO

Built during the years of the Emperor Justinian, the Castle of Maini (or Mainis), the oldest in Mani, is a historical monument. However, historians disagree to this day about where the Castle of Maini really was. Three basic scenarios currently exist: one at the Castle of Itylo, the second at the edge of the Tigani Peninsula, west of Mezapos, and the third west of Kipoula on the plateau of Ano Poula that leads north to the steep cliffs of Mesalimano.

History

Located at Cape Tigani near the bay of Mezapos, the Byzantine castle of Maini (or Mainis) is the oldest in Mani. Built in the years of the Emperor Justinian, the castle reservoirs and parts of the walls have survived.

How to Get There

To reach the castle, we drive past Stavri and end up at Agia Kyriaki. From then on we continue on foot. There is no specific path; just head toward the cape. Walk cautiously, because the ground is rough and rocky.

The total visit will take more than 90 minutes.
