LAKONIA, ANATOLIKI MANI, ITILO

This was the most important town of the League of Free Laconians (Koinou ton Eleftherolakonon). Built by the Tainarians, it was previously called Tainaros. The town was a religious center which flourished during the Roman era. The sanctuary of Aphrodite is noteworthy.

Kainipolis

The Acropolis of Kainipolis is located at Ampelia in the Kyparissos area, near the village of Alika. It is near the Messinian Gulf, about 10 kilometers from Cape Tainaro (Kavo Matapas) and 4 kilometers from Cape Thyrides (Kavo Grosso). Kainipolis (which means ‘New Town’) was known in ancient times as Tainaros. It was important because it hosted the pilgrims and visitors of the temple of Poseidon at Cape Tainaro, which was the most important sanctuary of the Lakonians.
