Location - History

A hill between the villages of Drosopigi and Panagitsa, midway between the Lakonian and Messinian gulfs, with the remains of a Byzantine town that flourished, especially during the years of the Palaiologos dynasty. The well preserved 13th century church of Saint George (Agios Georgios) is noteworthy.

Access

One kilometer after we leave Drosopigi on the road to Panagitsa, we see a sign to Palaia Karyoupoli. A dirt road begins there, so we either leave the car there and walk on foot, or if we can (for example, with a 4x4), we continue driving up the hill and leave our vehicle at the end of the road. From this point onward, we follow the uphill path (with care, because it is nearly hidden) for about 10 minutes, until we reach the top of the hill and the little church of Saint George (Agios Georgios).
