The first to begin archaeological research in Gythio was Professor Andreas Skias in 1891, at its northern end, where the ancient theater of Gythio (early imperial times) was revealed, as well as the acropolis west of the theater. Other important monuments of the area are the ancient sanctuary of the Amphiaraos hero by the theater, as well as the gallery.
