ARKADIA, GORTINIA, DIMITSANA

The few remnants of Ancient Theisoa (remains of the isodomic wall, the foundations of the sanctuary of the all powerful god Zeus, what is left of the medieval church of the Virgin Mary), are found by walking through the dense alpine vegetation on the hills southeast of Karkalou, at Paliokatouna.

How to Get There

To find the remnants of Ancient Theisoa that have survived to this day, follow the very interesting short route described below.

Starting from the intersection at Karkalou, we take the main road toward Vytina.

After 400 meters, once we pass a house with a wooden paddock on the right, we follow the dirt road that heads to the right. We can leave our vehicle or continue driving as far as the dirt road goes (just before the stream of Karkalou).

After another 400 meters, we will see on the left the ruins of a watermill that was powered by the Karkalou stream that flows a few meters below it.

Passing the little river, we climb up to the right, taking care to move in the wide clearing between the dense vegetation. We continue heading uphill to the right.

We stride up the slope, increasing our altitude by 60 meters compared to the ruined watermill. After about 300 meters, we find ourselves in an impressive landscape, a small lush plateau at an altitude of about 1,100 meters, surrounded by fir trees. 100 meters to the right, we will see the foundations of the sanctuary of the great god Zeus, and a few meters above that, the remnants of an isodomic wall of Ancient Theisoa.
