Info

At about 3-4km on the Tsitalia road from Plaka, we can see the signpost of the Archaeological Department for Palaiokastro. The path that starts from the road (and at about 1/3 of the way along, forks left towards Palaiokastro and right towards Tsitalia) is quite demanding (45mins) and leads us to the summit of the hill and the ruins of the castle.

Location

About 3-4 kilometers down the road from Plaka to Tsitalia, we can see on our left an Archaeological Service sign pointing toward the site of Paleokastro (Old Castle). Unfortunately, there is no good place to leave a car. The 30 to 45 minute path that starts from the road is quite demanding; it leads us to the top of the hill and the ruins of the castle.

Just for the view from above, by the castle, with the Myrtoan Sea in front of us, the bay of Poulithra to the southeast, and the valley of Leonidio to the northwest, the arduous climb is worthwhile.

The total distance from the point where we leave the road and start climbing is about 1500 meters. The altitude increases by 210 meters, from 280 meters to 490 meters at the top, by the castle.

Around the halfway point, the path separates, with one branch heading right and the other straight and left. We head left. If we look left, we will see the ruins of the castle on the hilltop across from us. The route the path takes from this point onward is very beautiful, and less tiring. From this point on, up to the hilltop, the altitude difference is less than 50 meters.
