"Chochlakia is one of the most special and most popular beaches on the island and is located on the SE end in Mandraki. Large black pebbles, the chochlakoi, that are difficult to step on especially when they are burning from the sun, and all around or the strong presence of volcanic lava, which forms dozens of ""pillows"" of gray basaltic andesite (the same material from which the Pelasgian old castle on the hill above our head was built). These layers are considered the oldest volcanic formations on the island. The waters are crystal clear and the seabed is beautiful, in the dark colors of the beach. Of course, especially when the wind is blowing, getting in and out of the sea is quite a strenuous effort."
