The islet of Giali is the newest volcanic center of the Nisyros region. It consists of two hills connected by a narrow isthmus. On the NW and SE sides of this isthmus, two beautiful beaches are formed. The SW part of the island consists of thick layers of pumice that have been created by two eruptions (approximately 10,000 years ago) after the formation of Nisyros. The first eruption deposited 160 meters thick layers of pumice into the sea, which has been exploited by a company since 1956. Above this layer, a much thinner 3-4 m. pumice rock is formed (solid rock made of pumice pebbles and thousands of fossilized shells). The NE part of the island consists exclusively of natural streams of natural glass (hence the name of the island), obsidian and perlite. The island can be visited for swimming, with daily excursions from Mandraki (approximately 20-25 minutes away) and the section that will be informed to you when you arrive is strictly the part that can be visited.
