Paleokastro is the oldest historical monument of Megisti, on the top of Vigla hill, north of the airport and west of the settlement. It was built in the 3rd century BC, on the ruins of the ancient Doric acropolis. Because the castle was used from antiquity until World War II by the Italians, in its fortifications we can distinguish signs from different historical periods (antiquity, Hellenistic times, Middle Ages, Middle Byzantine period, world wars). Inside the acropolis there was a settlement with houses, cisterns and churches, the ruins of which we can still see today. The churches of Panagia tou Kastro and Agios Stefanos, which are in good condition, stand out, which are connected by a pebbled floor from 1858. The road that leads to the airport leads to Paliokastro (200 meters before the airport we turn left onto the dirt road and in 600 meters we reach outside the walls of Paleokastro and the Monastery of Agios Panteleimonos.
