The island's first Orthodox church was built in the middle of the 16th century. It is called Saint Nicholas the Poor (Agios Nikolaos o Ftochos) to distinguish it from the church of Saint Nicholas the Rich (o Plousios), which is in the prestigious neighborhood of Vaporia in Hermoupolis.
