Serifos

The island of Serifos belongs to the Western Cyclades island cluster and lies between Kythnos and Sifnos. Although very close to Athens, it is not very touristy, but it does have plenty of facilities and --especially in August-- visitors.

How to Get There

From the port of Piraeus, it takes approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes to reach Serifos by conventional ferry. With the fast ferry, the trip takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Typical ticket prices are 28 and 43 euros respectively, while car prices are 57 euros for the ferry and 58 for the fast boat. More information on schedules and reservations is available at www.digitickets.gr.

Roads

Serifos has a fairly limited road network. The paved road connects the main villages of the island (Livadi, Koutalas, Megalo Livadi, Panagia, Galani, Kentarchos, Chora), while the rest of the island features only dirt roads. Most beaches are accessible by dirt road, and in many cases access is fairly difficult, since the dirt roads are in poor condition. Because of this as well as frequent winds, the use of a motorcycle or scooter is not appropriate. In Livadi, there are car and motorcycle rental agencies.

Other Modes of Transportation

A boat is very useful for getting around the island of Serifos, since many of the beaches are mainly or most easily accessible by sea. In Livadi, you can rent a boat or hire a sea taxi. Many of the points of interest (such as beaches and attractions) are also accessible via footpath, but unfortunately these are not adequately marked, so you need to ask the locals for detailed directions.

Local buses provide frequent service between Livadi and Chora (at 1.60 euro per ticket), with less frequent service to the other villages of Serifos.

Useful Tips and Information

1. In Serifos there is only one gas station; it is on the road that leads from Livadi to Chora. Distances may be small on the island, but be sure to fill up your gas tank, because the gas station is not open 24 hours a day.

2. Be careful when driving on windy days, especially on the north side of the island. If you are driving a motorcycle, assess the situation, and decide whether it is safest to stop until the strong wind subsides.

3. Because of the bad roads as well as many steep roads, bicycling is recommended only for short trips, such as from Livadi to Psili Ammos.

4. Most beaches are not marked by signs.

5. The marina in Livadi is a reasonably safe and secure place for boats, including sailboats.
